Brain and Mind Laboratory

Understanding how intelligent systems work

Jie-Rong Lin (林傑蠑)

Undergraduate Assistant

I am currently a senior at NTU, double majoring in philosophy (B.A.) and the interdisciplinary bachelor program in neuroscience and consciousness studies (B.S.). My research interests lie at the intersection of analytic philosophy of mind and cognitive science. I believe that in order to understand the relationship between the human mind and the world, it is required to ground philosophical theories in empirical research. Likewise, scientific research methods and results can benefit from philosophical analysis, providing deeper evaluation and prospects. This mutual exchange has led me to explore diverse topics that bridge both fields, with a particular focus on consciousness research.

I always hope to bridge the gap between human subjective experience and objective, physical matters. At the Brain and Mind Laboratory, we utilize both neuroimaging methods (e.g., fMRI) and subjective reports and discuss human mind functions from both perspectives, while also adopting computational models. My goal is to formalize discussions of phenomenal experiences in a structured way, rooted in biological foundations. Previously, I conducted research on “The Experience of Time in Altered States of Consciousness” under the College Student Research Scholarship, NSTC (國科會大專生計畫) with Dr. Lok-Chi Chan. I discuss three hypothetical models of human experience of time and whether we can find empirical evidence to support them. Currently, I am gaining experience in gathering firsthand empirical evidence through my work at the Brain and Mind Laboratory, which has enhanced my ability to work on interdisciplinary research.

During moments of relaxation, I enjoy soul music and horror movies, which never fail to stimulate vivid phenomenal experiences of mine.
