Students
Graduate and undergraduate students considering joining our lab for academic research studies should consider the following entry paths as well as the preparatory requirements.
Doctoral Students
Route

The Taiwan International Graduate Program Interdisciplinary Neuroscience (TIGP-INS)
- This is currently the preferred route for PhD students.
- This is a joint program between National Taiwan University (NTU) and Academia Sinica (AS).
- Advisorship is joint between Josh and a Research Scientist at AS.
- Students should check out the program application and terms at the AS website for the program.
- This program comes with some stipend from AS.
- This program primarily uses English as a medium of instruction (EMI).
- This program is open to both Taiwanese and Internationals.
- The NTU Psychology department
- This is via Josh's joint appointment at the Psychology Dept.
- The primary advisorship will be under Psychology faculty with co-mentorship with Josh.
- The NTU College of Medicine Program in Translational Medicine
- This is via Josh's joint appointment in the program.
Recommended preparation
- Have one or two publications in the domain of cognitive neurosciences.
- Evidence of good English research paper writing skills.
- Adept at one of Matlab, R, or Python with familiarity/flexibility in the others.
- Adept at human fMRI and psychological experimental design and analysis.
- A clear research question that is informed and relevant to the lab research domains (see Research).
Expected Requirement for Graduation
- One or two publications in reputable international cognitive neuroscience journals.
- At least 4 years of time commitment.
- Successful completion of Doctoral disseration and defense.
Master's Students
Route

The Graduate Institute of Brain and Mind Sciences (GIBMS)
- This is Josh’s primary appointment and this is the preferred route.
- There are separate applications for Taiwanese and Internationals.
Recommended preparation
- Concrete evidence of good English writing skills – reading and writing is a critical part of scientific reporting and you will need to prove adequate competence.
- Adept at either Matlab, R, Python.
- Background or training in psychological experiments & data science.
- Adept at human fMRI and psychological experimental design and analysis.
- fMRI/EEG background is a big plus.
- A clear research question that is informed and relevant to the lab research domains (see Research).
Expected Requirement for Graduation
- One manuscript ready for submission in reputable international cognitive neuroscience journals.
- At least 2 years of time commitment (2.5 years is typical).
- Successful completion of Master’s thesis and defense.
Undergraduate Internship
Route
- The GIBMS NTU undergraduate research courses (see NTU course registration website for GIBMS 7113, GIBMS 7118).
- The NTU Psychology Dept. undergraduate research course (search for NTU Psychology courses for details).
Recommended preparation
- Experience with either Matlab, R, Python.
- Motivation to help out in lab research projects.
Expectated Requirement for Course Grade
- Clear participation in lab research activities.
- Completion of lab assigned tasks.
